The theory that I chose to go with my topic was “The afterlife ofslavery”. I chose this theory because I thought it would be a good way to show the trials andtribulations that African Americans face daily and how Afrofuturism is evidence that they haveconquered some of those hard times. The quote that further explains this statement is “They triedto bury us, but they didn't know we were seeds.” The first five words of the quote represents howblack people were treated. They were not given the same things as white people, like full accessto education. This essentially makes them “buried”. While the other half of the quote representshow black people responded to being left out. They did the unexpected and “sprouted” meaningtheir knowledge and successfulness proved doubters wrong. One event I chose for my projectthat I found interesting was the hair shows in Atlanta. This is because it teaches people to loveblack hair and show how versatile it is. This is important to me because I used to have problemswith liking my hair. These shows are very beneficial to show how beautiful black peoples andtheir hair really are. Afrofuturism allows black people to know more about their history and theendless possibilities the future could hold for them. This is evident in places like Minneapolis,Minnesota, Washington, D.C., East Lansing, Michigan, Memphis, Tennessee, Houston, Texas,Atlanta, Georgia and New Orleans, Louisiana. These places have different forms of art that serve
Harris 2to reclaim lost African history or imagine a limitless future for African Americans. Afrofuturismcan be found in many places like museums, restaurants, studios, and on social media.Afrofuturism continues to destroy the racial stereotypes against Black Americans because just byviewing Afrofuturism we can see intelligence, innovation, and excellence.
