Final Project Afrofuturism in music: Celebrating Black culture, resilience, and love Music in Black culture is essential.

Music is also an important aspect of Afrofuturism because it is an act of storytelling and expressing yourself through music. Music is also a great way to bring people together. Artists can embrace creativity and freedom through their music. There is also a way to celebrate and express resilience in music. In the book “Dark Matter”, certain stories have themes of music that have references to resilience and futuristic concepts. The topic I chose to focus on for this project is Black history and culture. As a more detailed concept of my topic, I have chosen to focus on songs that have a theme of love, resilience, self-discovery, and the struggles of the Black community. The songs that focus on these topics are: Black Parade by Beyonce, this song has themes of Black cultural pride and resilience. This song celebrates African Heritage. Essence by Wizkid & Tems is another song that has an Afrofuturistic theme. Afrofuturism is reimagining the past for a better future through technology and space. The song “Essence” focuses on joy, and connection, which are important components of Afrofuturism that help to imagine a better future for the Black communities. “Didn’t Cha Know” by Erykah Badu is another song that has Afrofuturistic themes in it. This song focuses on self-discovery and has a genre of neo-soul combined with futuristic vibes. For an example of self-discovery, the song states “I’m trying to decide, which way to go”. This song also focuses on survival in the face of struggles. “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar is another song that emphasizes the struggles and the victories of the Black community. “Alright” is a song that is an anthem for hope and resilience. This song is an example of Afrofuturism by reimagining a future where Black people overcome struggles and overcome their obstacles. “Everything is Everything by Lauryn Hill is another example of hope and pride. It celebrates black identity and inspires hope for the future. “Many Moons” by Janelle Monae is a song that has themes of Black empowerment, and Afrofuturism. “Many Moons” has elements of science fiction and Black identity. This song is set in a futuristic world where the character in the song is trying to escape from struggles and wants to experience freedom. “ATLiens” by OutKast is a song that celebrates black creativity. This is an example of Afrofuturism by having science fiction and rap as genres of the song. “ATLiens” speaks on the idea of being an “alien” which can speak to Black people being invisible or existing outside of the struggles of the black communities. This song is highly dependent on sci-fi, which is a main concept of Afrofuturism. The song “Fight The Power” by Public Enemy, while not directly an example of Afrofuturism, it has many elements that align with Afrofuturism. One of them is reclaiming Black identity and power and it has a Futuristic aesthetic to it. One of the songs that I found that had the most powerful examples of Afrofuturism is “The Rain” (Supa Dupa Fly) by Missy Elliott. This song blends Futuristic concepts and technology. It also focuses on the reimagining of black identity. “Mothership Connection” by Parliament is another one of those songs that captures what Afrofuturism is in a great way. The “Mothership” represents liberation and empowerment for Black people. It has a science fiction element in the song that helps to reclaim power. “Cranes In the Sky” by Solange is another song that I thought would fit well into this category. In this song, Solange addresses the burden that struggles put on specifically Black women. This song is about healing and creating a better future for Black women who are going through certain struggles in their life. Another song that contributes to the topic would be “Glory” by John Legend and Common. The lyrics in the song mention moments in history that were part of the civil struggles in the past. One example being the Selma marches. The lyrics “One day, when the glory comes, it will be ours”, is a testament to the hopeful vision of a better future where oppression doesn’t exist. “Electric Lady” by Janelle Monae is an example of Afrofuturism because it has themes of empowerment, celebration of Black women, and futuristic identity. The “Electric Lady” as mentioned in the song, represents a Black woman who embraces her differences. The Electric Lady symbolizes freedom from hardships. The visuals in the video have futuristic costumes. In conclusion, this mixtape will help to gain knowledge of the importance of Afrofuturism in music. This mixtape will explain the ideas of love, resilience, self-identity, perseverance, and more that contribute to the focus of Afrofuturism.
