Major Project Written Portion
My visual project is an acrylic painting collaborated with Lenim Miguel Zelaya from the
Tuesday-Thursday 11:00am - 12:15pm African American Literature class. The subject matter is
a visualization of Doro and Anyanwu boarding Doro’s slave ship as they go from Africa to
America in chapter 3. Using a plank, Doro is shown boarding the ship first as Anyanwu watches
him, daunted by the unknown symbolized by how the image of the ship itself takes up most of
the painting, creating an intimidating presence in comparison, as Anyanwu, who is in male form
during this time, is dwarfed by it in the bottom right corner as she stands on the peer. With the
sun’s placement in the top right of the composition, we tried our best to make the lighting reflect
as such in the lighting and shading of Anyanwu’s hair, Doro’s coat, and the details on the peer as
well as the shadow of the plank they are using to board the boat.
Getting into our contributions, Miguel did a rough sketch of the composition after
choosing a scene out of the book to depict, while I did a more detailed sketch as we did research
on what slave ships looked like. Despite society’s knowledge of them, we found VERY few
reference images, as most the images we found were diagrams of the methods slave traders
would pack slaves in their ships themselves. After finalizing the sketch, we worked it up with
acrylic paints, starting off with the sky and touching upon the ship and Anyanwu, trying to get
down a color palette we’d use throughout the painting making sure we would occasionally thin
the paint with water to make sure we were committed to the color or not. Painting in layers, we
would go into the details of the logs and the golden rim and the peer until we came out with the
one we have now
